Abia Lawmakers Move to Address Bad Road, Reform Education
…. Assembly Sets New Committees, Speaks on Date to Honour late Former Gov Onu
In view of the yuletide season and need to assuage the sufferings of commuters plying the Ikot-Ekpene umuahia Ikwuano Federal road and Obohia road in Aba, the members of the Abia State House of Assembly have taken decisive action to address the infrastructure decay.
Taking the resolution during plenary chaired by the speaker of the Assembly Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa charged the House Committee on works to invite the management of Heartland Construction Company and Commissioner for works for urgent deliberation to end the menace.
The resolution came to the fore following a matter of urgent public importance sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustine Okezie which other legislators gave a nod to.
In a related development, the member representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Ibekwe Nnamdi lamented on the condition of Umunneato General Hospital which is currently in a sorry state and called for government intervention to redeem the facility.
In voice vote, the legislators agreed that the chairman House Committee on Heath should liaise with the State Ministry of health and Management of the hospital to identify its setbacks with the view of finding lasting solutions.
The house proceeding was a marathon race as numerous items were conclusively treated. The member representing Ikwuano constituency Hon. Boniface Isienyi through a motion with the title, “Motion for the State Government to relocate street trading activities opposite Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) to Umuariaga Oboro Market in Ikwuano Local Government Area” convinced his colleagues to persuade Governor Alex Otti to do the needful to save lives and stop defacing the citadel of learning.
HAB 26, the Abia State Education reform bill, 2024 sponsored by Hon. Chinasa Anthony who is representing Umuahia Central passed second reading.
Leading the debate, Hon Anthony noted that the bill if passed would help to bring total reform on both public and private schools in the State. For further legislative action, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Education to revert in 3 weeks.
For better legislative action, the member representing Aba North constituency Hon
Aaron Uzodike was made the Chairman House committee on Power, Public Utility and Water Resources while Hon. Chijioke Uruakpa of Ugwunagbo constituency was reassigned to chair the House Committee on Trade and Commerce. The members of the two committees remained unchanged.
A new Committee on Food Security and Nutrition was created with the member representing Umunneochi constituency Hon. Mathias Ume as it’s chairman with Hon. Emeka Obioma, Hon. Aaron Emmanuel Uzodike, Hon. Dennis Rowland Chinwendu, Hon. Chinaza Anthony, Hon. Lewis Obianyi, and Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu as members.
The recent development did not foreclose Hon Ume from being the chairman House Committee on Budget and Planning.
On a sad note, the Speaker read an invitation letter addressed to his office by the Secretary to State Government (SSG), Prof. Kenneth Kalu, inviting all the State Lawmakers and staff of the Assembly to an inter-denominational Church Service and day of tributes in honour of the first civilian Governor of Abia State, late Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu CON on Thursday 7th November, 2024 at international conference centre umuahia by 11am.
