Chief Emegha, in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Abakaliki, said  the late Onu was a detribalised citizen of the country who promoted justice and equal rights of everyone.

The message read in parts;

“It is with a great shock and anguish that I received the sad news of the demise of Former Minister of Science and Technology who was a true party man and

eminent son of our dear state Ebonyi, His Excellency, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu”.

“The former Minister during the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was also the first Civilian Executive Governor in the old Abia State. Dr Onu nicknamed “Ugo” set the tune of development in the state through his numerous gigantic landmarks”.

“During the last administration of the federal government, His Excellency, Dr Onu stood as a formidable force that constantly canvassed for the unity, progress and equality of all the regions that make up the entity called Nigeria. He was detribalised and advocated justice and fair play for all. His patriotic nature reflected in every step he took while alive”.

“It is unfortunate and exhausting that a symbol of peace whose dress sense was fantastically rare and heart smoothing would be greatly missed now his wealth of managerial skills is highly sought after by all and sundry. His Excellency, Dr Onu until his death was a national asset”.

“May the all knowing God grant especially the immediate family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss and his gentle soul a peaceful repose in His bosom. Please, kindly accept my sincere condolences and  earnest prayers”.
