The Ebonyi State Government said a total of 29 contractors have been blacklisted for poor performance and also barred from carrying out further jobs till the end of the present administration in the state.
The contracting firms affected are those handling the Izzo and Amaeze Autonomous Communities’ 140 housing units in Ishielu council area which was proposed to serve as resettlement home for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Ezza/Ezillo Communal crisis that consumed many lives and properties worth billions of naira.
The estate, the state said was conceived to resettle the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the Ezza, Ezillo Communal crisis that led to the death of many persons and destruction of properties worth billions.
Briefing Journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held at the New Government House in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Engr. Jude Okpor noted that the Council considered the report on the performance of different contractors handling the jobs before the decision to blacklist them.
According to Engr Okpor, the decision was to ensure that no contractor constitutes a clog in the wheel of the development efforts of the Governor Nwifuru-led administration in the State.
“Council considered a report of performance of different contractors handling jobs in the ongoing Estates for the resettlement of Izzo and Amaeze autonomous communities in Ishielu Local government area”. He said.
“Council approved the blacklisting of 29 contractors for unsatisfactory performance and barred them from winning further jobs in the State, ”Engr Okpor noted.
The Information Boss also disclosed that the State government has set up a Peace Committee to liaise with the Implementation Committee and other concerned line ministries to actualize the Government White Paper on the restoration of permanent peace between Ezza Effium and Effium people in Effium community of Ohaukwu local government area of the State.
Okpor said: “The Committee is composed of the following:(i) Amb. Frank Nchita Ogbuewu – Chairman (ii) Senator Sonni Ogbuoji – member (iii) Representatives from the Ministries of Lands, Survey, Housing, Works and Transport – members (iv) All members of the existing Implementation Committee – members (v) Rev. Fr. Dr. Abraham Nwali – Secretary.

“Addressing Council members on the issue, Chairman of Council and Governor of Ebonyi state, Right Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru re-emphasized that his administration will continue do everything humanly possible to ensure peace in all parts of the state.
“He assured that the government would ensure the implementation of the approved recommendations in the White Paper within the limit of the state economy, so as to have lasting peace between the Effium and Ezza Effium in Ohaukwu LGA.
“Council directed the SSG to inaugurate the Peace Committee tomorrow 9th April, 2024 to enable them commence work immediately.”
However, the Information Commissioner, Engr Jude Okpor further announced that the State government has approved the construction of a total 134Km first phase of roads in 67 communities across the State. The 2km roads in each of the community will help to open up the areas for more economic activities.
