ABAKAKIKI – Ebonyi State has taken a major step in advancing scientific research and disease surveillance with the arrival of a state-of-the-art Electron Microscope at the ongoing Virology, Research and Innovation Centre in Oferekpe.
The State Virologist, Dr. Euslar Nnenna Onu, described the equipment as a major boost to the state’s ambition of becoming a regional hub for biomedical research and innovation.
She said the microscope would support research in virology, bacteriology, mycology, immunology and parasitology, as well as the analysis of plants, minerals and materials, including lead.
The equipment follows the arrival of the first and second batches of specialised equipment at the centre in June 2026.
The newly delivered Electron Microscope is reportedly the only one of its kind currently available in the South-East.
When fully operational, the centre is expected to strengthen disease detection, surveillance and response, support advanced research and training, and reduce Ebonyi’s dependence on external laboratories for specialised investigations.
The facility, currently under construction at Oferekpe, is part of the state government’s investment in health security, scientific research and innovation.
The development has attracted a lot of commendations for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration for investing in infrastructure expected to strengthen Ebonyi’s capacity to confront emerging health challenges.
