Group Urges Enugu Governor to Pick Female Successor for Vacant Senatorial Position
A coalition of women-led advocacy groups has appealed to Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, to consider appointing a female candidate to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly.
The call was led by the group, Loudest Voice for Dr. Peter Mbah, alongside six allied support organisations. According to the coalition, selecting a woman would be a landmark decision, marking the first time a female representative from the state would serve in the Senate.
Other groups backing the appeal include City Boys Movement, Umunda Peter Mbah Worldwide, Jesus Wives Prayer Network, Women Support Women For Human Empowerment and Mentorship Initiative (WOSUWO), NCWS, and Resilience Divine Widows.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Enugu, the convener, Onyinye Mamah, stressed that appointing a woman would deepen inclusivity and enhance democratic representation across the state.
She further noted that several women from the district, especially those from Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, possess the qualifications, experience, and leadership capacity needed to represent the people effectively.
Mamah added that offering a woman the opportunity aligns with the growing national demand for increased female participation in governance.
“Our dear governor, we the women of Enugu State love you very much. You are the pride of Enugu State.
“We thank you for what you have been doing and one you are yet to do. We are happy to have a governor who you do not struggle to explain women inclusion in politics.
“You have been including women in your government but as Oliver Twist, we are asking for more,” Mamah added.
Also speaking, Ifeyinwa Ojukwu called on political stakeholders and relevant authorities to rally behind the nomination of a capable female candidate, noting that such a move would set a positive example for other states.
She reiterated the group’s continued support for the governor’s administration and expressed optimism that the appeal would be considered in the spirit of fairness and inclusive governance.
The senatorial position became vacant following the death of Okey Ezea, leading to ongoing consultations among political stakeholders on a suitable replacement.
