First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 500 women in Ebonyi State with freezers, generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cookers and other livelihood-support items to boost their businesses and improve household incomes.
Mrs Tinubu flagged off the distribution of the items on Wednesday at the Old Government House, Abakaliki, as part of the Federal Government’s intervention programmes for vulnerable and indigent women across the country.
Represented at the event by the wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, the First Lady said the initiative was designed to uplift rural women and create sustainable economic opportunities for them.
She disclosed that the empowerment programme was being implemented simultaneously across the five South-East states, with 500 women selected to benefit in each state.
According to her, the initiative, which was facilitated through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, was first launched in Abuja for the North-Central zone last year.
The First Lady urged the beneficiaries not to sell the items but put them into productive use to improve their livelihoods.
“Don’t sell the items. Allow them to serve as a foundation for building better lives for yourselves and your families,” she said.
Similarly, the SSA to the President on SDGs, Princess Orelope-Adefulire, said the programme was aimed at expanding economic opportunities for vulnerable women, reducing poverty, inequality and promoting economic growth across the country.
