The Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Hon. Chidiebere Onyema Alo, has charged newly inaugurated councillors across the council’s wards to place public interest above personal and partisan considerations by strengthening grassroots governance and accelerating development.
Alo gave the charge at the inauguration of the councillors at the Abakaliki Local Government Headquarters, stressing that effective local government administration remained critical to delivering democracy’s benefits to Nigerians at the grassroots.
He urged the councillors to work closely with stakeholders and the executive arm of the council, while carrying their constituents along in the formulation and implementation of policies affecting their wards.
The chairman reminded them that their election was a mandate to serve the people, urging them to commit their time and resources to addressing pressing community needs.
Alo also warned against conflicts between the councillors and APC members in their respective wards, insisting that political cohesion was necessary for effective governance and development.
“In APC, we don’t have division,” he declared.
He commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of Ebonyi people, while praying for continued wisdom and blessings for the governor.
Earlier, the Clerk of the House, Comrade Sunday Nwambam Daniel, administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to the councillors, who pledged to uphold and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and discharge their duties faithfully in the interest of the people.
In a goodwill message, the APC candidate for Abakaliki South Constituency in the House of Assembly election, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangele, urged the councillors to forge a strong working relationship with the chairman and enact bylaws capable of promoting peace, prosperity and development.
The ceremony climaxed with the adoption of a motion electing Hon. Uchenna Nwojiji as Leader of the Legislative Council and Hon. Ngwaga Chukwuma as Deputy Leader.
Others elected were Hon. Emeka Nwokpuru, Majority Leader; Hon. Aloy Nwite, Deputy Majority Leader; Hon. Chika Nwenyi, Chief Whip; and Hon. Sunday Nwankwo, Deputy Chief Whip.
