Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State yesterday threatened to remove any of the 13 newly elected Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen who fails to deliver his council to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Gov Nwifuru handed down the warning while swearing in the chairmen at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, the state capital.
The governor also announced the appointment of 1,710 Executive Assistants, as he moved to strengthen his administration’s presence at the grassroots.
Addressing the new council bosses, Nwifuru made it clear that their jobs would be tied not only to their administrative performance but also to the political fortunes of the APC in their respective councils.
He warned that any chairman who allows the opposition to take his council in the 2027 elections would face the consequences.
The governor said he would closely monitor the performance of the chairmen and would not hesitate to take action against those who fail to justify the confidence reposed in them.
He charged them to work hard, deliver development to their people and strengthen the APC ahead of the 2027 polls.
Nwifuru urged the chairmen not to become complacent because of their new positions, stressing that leadership comes with responsibility and accountability.
He also took a hard line against opposition parties, directing the council chairmen to resist their political advances in their respective areas.
“Let me sound it this way, and I want to see it on the pages of newspapers tomorrow: deal with opposition parties mercilessly,” he declared.
The governor, however, reminded the chairmen that political mobilisation must go hand-in-hand with good governance, urging them to focus on projects and policies that would improve the lives of residents.
The warning has effectively placed the 13 council chairmen at the heart of the APC’s grassroots campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, with their political performance now under the watch of the state government.
