Enugu Unveils State Airline, Draws National Praise

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine regional air travel, Enugu State has launched Enugu Air, a government-owned airline aimed at transforming the state into a strategic aviation hub in West Africa.

The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Peter Mbah, received high commendation from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, during the official unveiling ceremony held in Enugu.

The airline is taking off with three Embraer jets and a vision to expand both regionally and internationally, connecting Enugu to major Nigerian cities and eventually to global destinations.

Minister Keyamo, who commissioned the airline, described Governor Mbah as a “relentless and incredible” leader. He praised Mbah’s private sector drive and swift accomplishments in office, hinting that his performance could make him a formidable political force in 2027.

“Governor Mbah was the first to visit me after my swearing-in. He brought his aviation plan to my desk without delay. Frankly, we’re worried about how to defeat him in 2027” says Keyamo.

Keyamo also highlighted the partnership between the state and XEJet, a fully Nigerian-owned aviation company currently operating Sierra Leone’s national carrier, calling it a model for indigenous success.

On the ongoing plans to concession the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, the minister assured the public that it aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on leveraging private sector investment to upgrade national infrastructure.

“Governor Mbah isn’t waiting for bureaucracy. He’s pushing for results. As I speak, approvals for regional flights out of Enugu are underway”- Keyamo said

Despite belonging to opposing political parties, Keyamo applauded Mbah’s leadership and affirmed that performance should transcend partisan lines.

You’re in PDP, I’m not, but we can’t deny results. Even Mr. President recognizes your pace. You rank among the best-performing governors in Nigeria.”

Governor Mbah, in his speech, described the launch of Enugu Air as a bold step to unlock economic potential, enhance connectivity, and create opportunities across the region. He announced plans for a phased expansion that begins with the “golden triangle” of Enugu–Abuja–Lagos and will soon reach Port Harcourt, Kano, Owerri, and beyond.

“We’re not just launching an airline—we’re launching a new phase of prosperity. Enugu Air will link our people to opportunities and bring the world closer to our doorstep,” Mbah said.

He acknowledged the critical support of President Tinubu, Minister Keyamo, Fidelity Bank, aviation agencies, and partners for their roles in making the airline a reality.

Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, assured the public of the airline’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and world-class service.

Other dignitaries at the event included Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Engr. Ayuba Emmanuel, CEO of XEJet, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, traditional rulers, business leaders, and a jubilant crowd of residents.
