APC Strengthens Grip in Ebonyi as PDP Heavyweights, Supporters Defect
The political dynamics in Ebonyi State took a decisive turn over the weekend as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomed a fresh wave of high-profile defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in what many analysts describe as a major boost to the party’s growing dominance in the state.
At a well attended ceremony in Abakaliki, the State Chairman of the APC, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, formally received notable PDP stalwarts, including Austin Igwe Edeze and Franka Okpo, alongside a substantial number of their supporters from different local government areas.
The event, which drew party leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots mobilisers, was marked by a show of solidarity and optimism as the new entrants were integrated into the APC fold.
In his remarks, Emegha described the development as a clear affirmation of the APC’s rising acceptance among the people of Ebonyi. According to him, the influx of former PDP members reflects a growing trust in the policies and leadership direction of the current administration in the state.
“This movement is not just symbolic; it is strategic. It shows that Ebonyi people are increasingly aligning with a vision anchored on continuity, unity, and sustainable development. Our Governor and leader, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is committed to the overall development of the state and her citizenry”, he stated.
He assured the defectors that the party remains open and inclusive, promising them equal opportunities and full participation in party affairs at all levels.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Edeze said their decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and constituents. He noted that joining the APC was a deliberate step aimed at contributing more effectively to governance and development in the state.
Also addressing the gathering, Okpo expressed appreciation to the APC leadership for what she described as a warm and accommodating reception. She pledged unwavering loyalty to the party and emphasized her readiness to mobilize support, particularly among women and grassroots communities.
Political observers believe the latest wave of defections could further erode the PDP’s influence in Ebonyi State, where the APC has continued to expand its reach in recent years. Many note that if the trend will significantly affect upcoming elections in the state.
