2026 Workers’ Day: Nwifuru Commends Ebonyi Workers, Pledges Better Welfare
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has commended Ebonyi workers for their resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions to the socio-economic development of the state, while pledging improved welfare for the workforce as the world marked Workers’ Day on May 1, 2026.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Princess Patricia Onyemechi Obila, described the Ebonyi workforce as hardworking and engine of government stressing that the Nwifuru led administration runs a system where hard work is rewarded and service honoured, in line with the “People’s Charter of Needs” mantra.
On government’s commitment to workers’ welfare, the deputy governor stated that the administration had raised the minimum wage to N95,000 to ensure every worker earns a living wage to make life better. In addition, she said the government had extended welfare interventions to health workers to improve their working conditions.
She also recalled that the state government procured vehicles to ease the mobility challenges faced by workers commuting to and from their workplaces daily adding that trainings and other professional initiatives of the Governor were aimed at enhancing workers’ productivity and professionalism.
“The task of building a prosperous Ebonyi rests on the workers, and they remain our priority. We are steadfast to take you to the highest level,” she said.
Moreover, she assured workers that their voices would always matter and their well-being would remain top priority. Consequently, urging them to engage government constructively through their unions, and also acknowledged demands raised by the NLC Chairperson, Comrade Ogugua Egwu, in his joint address.
Similarly, the member representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, Comrade Chinedu Ogah, thanked Governor Nwifuru for prioritising workers’ welfare through improved packages, and announced a cash donation to ease their transportation fees.
Also speaking, NLC State Chairperson, Comrade Ogugua Egwu, described Governor Nwifuru as workers’ friendly, but pleaded for urgent attention to issues such as workers’ housing estate, payment of pensions for the staff of Ikwo College of Education and Ebonyi State University among other institutions.
The event took place at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki with deserving workers receiving awards of honour.
