Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi has emerged as the only Presidential aspirant under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, ahead of the party’s primaries.
The development followed the closure of the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the party’s presidential race on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
An insider confirmed that Obi was the only politician who purchased and completed the forms before the deadline expired.
In a statement, NDC National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu said the window for collecting presidential forms had officially closed. He added that the party extended the deadline for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly, to midnight on May 24, 2026.
According to the timetable released by the party, screening of aspirants who purchased and submitted forms will run from Tuesday, May 19 to Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The collection and return of Nomination Forms for screened and cleared aspirants is scheduled for May 20 to May 26. The party warned that no further extension would be granted beyond the new deadline.
Obi, a former two-term governor of Anambra State, joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress, ADC, earlier this year. His emergence as the sole aspirant has strengthened speculation that he may become the party’s consensus candidate for 2027.
The move marks another shift in Obi’s political realignment ahead of the next election cycle, following his exit from the Labour Party in 2025 and a brief stint in the ADC.
