The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has awarded scholarships worth over ₦100 million to more than 900 indigent undergraduate and postgraduate students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The scholarship presentation, held at Re-Meritona Hotel, Abakaliki, attracted hundreds of beneficiaries, political leaders, government officials and traditional rulers.
Speaking at the event, Sen Nwebonyi said the initiative was inspired by his personal educational journey and his desire to assist brilliant but financially challenged students. He noted that his commitment to education predated his entry into politics and pledged to sustain the programme.
The senator said his interventions in education, road construction and other infrastructure projects were aimed at delivering quality representation to the people of Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone.
According to him, no previous senator from the zone had matched his record in scholarship awards and constituency development, adding that his efforts were driven by his determination to ensure that every community benefits from democracy and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s development agenda.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and appealed to the people of Ebonyi North to support President Tinubu, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and his own re-election bid in 2027.
Governor Nwifuru’s Principal Secretary, Chief Mathias Adum, commended Nwebonyi for what he described as quality representation, saying his performance justified another term in office. He also advised the students to avoid using social media to malign leaders and to uphold good character.
Other stakeholders described the senator as an outstanding legislator deserving continued support, urging the beneficiaries to justify the opportunity through academic excellence and good character.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Nwangbo Alexander and Chioma Nwibo thanked Senator Nwebonyi and pledged to excel in their studies.
Nwebonyi had earlier sponsored scholarships for indigent law and medical students from different parts of the country as part of his commitment to education and human capital development.
