The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State branch, has commenced a tree-planting campaign to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Speaking during the exercise, the branch chairperson, Comrade Louis Omenyi, said the initiative was in compliance with the directive of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC).
Omenyi said the branch chose its secretariat under construction as the starting point, stressing that charity begins at home. He added that work on the project had resumed to safeguard it against the adverse effects of climate change.
He commended the national leadership of the union, under Comrade Chris Piwuna, for introducing the initiative in Nigerian universities, noting that it would help address environmental degradation on campuses and their environs.
Similarly, the Director of AEFUNAI Campus Green Initiative and Head of the Department of Architecture, Arc. Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwu, commended the union and urged other campus unions to emulate the initiative.
Chukwu assured ASUU of technical support from his directorate and department to ensure a more environmentally friendly secretariat.
The highlight of the exercise was the planting of a tree each by the 10-member ASUU branch executive.
