Ebonyi Governor Increases Salary Medical Doctors’ Salary To ₦500k

The Governor of Ebonyi State Rt. Hon Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has increased the salary of medical Doctors from N150,000 to a minimum of N500,000. The increment affects the newly employed medical doctors in all general hospitals facilities in the state.
Governor Nwifuru made the announcement during the flag off of health activation in preparation for a drug revolving fund and the distribution of medical equipment to the 13 general hospitals in the state at the Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre in Abakaliki, the capital city of the State.
While explaining neglect the health sector in the state has suffered ranging from insufficient funding, inadequate personnel, and a lack of basic equipment over the years, he warned against the diversion of medical equipment, stating that violators will face penalties from the government.
“Today, we are taking a bold step forward with the launch of the Drug Revolving Fund. This initiative will ensure the continuous availability of essential drugs in all our general hospitals.
“The revolving nature of the fund guarantees sustainability, transparency, and accountability. It serves as a lifeline for our rural communities, who will now have access to quality medicines at affordable rates.
“We have already achieved over 60% delivery of essential drugs, and the process will continue until full coverage is attained. I urge our healthcare workers and facility managers to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in managing these resources.
“Regarding the distribution of medical equipment, our hospitals cannot function effectively without adequate tools. Therefore, we are providing modern medical equipment, including hospital beds, mattresses, patient monitors, drip stands, and other critical consumables.
“These items are not for decoration—they are essential instruments for life-saving services. This investment, worth over one billion naira, marks a significant milestone in our efforts to reposition Ebonyi’s health sector.
“In recognition of the human resource gaps, we have recruited 195 healthcare professionals—doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists—who are already posted to all our general hospitals to ensure optimal service delivery. We are also collaborating with relevant institutions to train and retrain our health workforce, ensuring they meet global best practices.
“I call on our community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society to join us in monitoring and protecting these investments. Let the health facilities belong to the people. Ownership brings responsibility.
“Let me be clear: accountability is not an option; it is a duty. Any form of mismanagement or diversion of public resources will be met with firm action. We have already demonstrated our commitment to not condoning negligence, as evidenced by recent decisions made in the sector.
“Our vision is to establish specialist hospitals in each of the three senatorial zones to provide advanced healthcare services, reduce medical tourism, and save lives. We are also exploring partnerships for healthcare financing and digital health systems to ensure efficiency and access.
“Today marks a new dawn for health in Ebonyi. Let this flag-off serve as a call to action for our health workers, our communities, and every stakeholder. Together, we can accelerate our vision to build a system that delivers hope, healing, and health to all,” Nwifuru assured.
