Security agencies in Enugu State have pledged to ensure adequate security before, during and after Saturday’s Local Government elections.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, gave the assurance on Thursday in Enugu while speaking on behalf of the various security agencies ahead of the Sept. 26 poll.
Giwa said robust security strategies had been deployed to protect voters, election officials and electoral materials, particularly at identified flashpoints.
He said there was no known threat to the election, adding that intelligence had been deployed to prevent violence and ensure a peaceful exercise.
“We have put our heads together to come out with formidable strategies for the conduct of the election,” he said.
The police commissioner urged voters and supporters to protect their votes peacefully and respect electoral laws.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Prof. Christian Ngwu, said the commission was fully prepared for the election.
Ngwu urged eligible voters to come out with their voter cards and elect candidates of their choice, assuring them of adequate security.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Army, Air Force, Navy, NSCDC, DSS, FRSC, Immigration, Customs, Correctional Service and fire services, among others.
ENSIEC is conducting elections for 17 chairmanship and 260 councillorship positions across the state.
