The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Abakaliki North State Constituency, Arc. Joseph Ogbaga, has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democracy, saying its survival depends on active citizen participation and protection of the people’s mandate.
In a Democracy Day statement, Arc. Ogbaga said the occasion should inspire Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes and recommit to safeguarding the nation’s democratic gains.
“Democracy is not only about casting ballots during elections; it is about ensuring that those votes are protected and that the will of the people is reflected in governance,” he stated.
He stressed that credible elections, transparency and accountability are vital for sustaining public confidence in governance, urging citizens to monitor government activities and hold leaders accountable.
Arc. Ogbaga said the people of Abakaliki North deserve quality representation focused on education, healthcare, youth empowerment and rural infrastructure, adding that governance is more effective when leaders remain connected to the grassroots.
“The strength of democracy lies in the people. When citizens are informed, united, and active, it becomes difficult for democracy to be undermined,” he said.
He pledged to institutionalize regular town hall meetings across the seven wards of Abakaliki North if elected, to promote transparency and grassroots participation.
The ADC candidate also promised to champion youth and women empowerment and sponsor laws that would create economic opportunities and improve the standard of living of the people.
Arc. Ogbaga called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in protecting democratic values, insisting that vigilance and collective responsibility are essential for national development.
