Road Chaos: Enugu Govt Gives 5-DAY Ultimatum

The Enugu State Government has raised alarm over the growing number of abandoned and broken-down vehicles littering major and minor roads across the state, warning that such practices have become a serious threat to public safety, free traffic flow, and the durability of road infrastructure.
In a joint public announcement issued by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), authorities expressed deep concern over the conversion of road corridors into makeshift mechanic workshops. The statement noted that activities such as oil spillage, fuel leakage, welding, and other unregulated mechanical operations carried out directly on road surfaces are weakening the asphalt and damaging public infrastructure.
According to the agencies, these roadside activities have created unnecessary traffic bottlenecks, environmental hazards, and avoidable safety risks for residents.
To restore order, the government has issued a five-day ultimatum to owners of abandoned or broken-down vehicles, roadside mechanics, artisans, and traders encroaching on road verges and shoulders.
“All abandoned vehicles, broken-down vehicles, makeshift mechanic workstations, and roadside activities that pollute or damage the road must be removed within five days of this announcement,” the notice warned.
The government emphasised that trading, long-term parking, oil changing, mechanical repairs, and any other activity obstructing traffic on public roads are strictly prohibited.
Beginning Tuesday, November 25, 2025, a coordinated enforcement operation will commence across the state. Officials will remove abandoned and obstructive vehicles, while violators will face sanctions including fines, towing and recovery fees, and possible prosecution under relevant state laws.
Mechanics and other roadside operators have been urged to relocate to approved designated locations.
The statement, dated 19th November 2025, reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the ECTDA to ensuring clean, safe, and motorable roads for all residents of Enugu State.
