The Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Enugu State Chapter, has commenced a seven-day warning strike over the government’s failure to address outstanding welfare and remuneration demands.

The association disclosed this on Friday in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Comrade K.P. Onyia, and Secretary, Comrade M.O. Onyeze, in Enugu.

It said the action followed prolonged efforts to persuade the government to address what it described as the plight of Law Officers in the state.

Central to the demands, the association said, was the full harmonisation of Law Officers’ remuneration with that of Magistrates.

It also demanded payment of members’ Bar Practising Fees and annual Bar Conference fees, as well as the restoration and payment of several allowances and professional fees.

Others include the full restoration and payment, including arrears, of transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances.

According to the statement, the warning strike commenced at midnight on Friday, October 2, and would last for seven judicial days.

It directed Law Officers in Abuja and Lagos Liaison Offices, Government House and all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to stay off duty and refrain from attending court or visiting correctional centres, police stations and other law enforcement agencies in furtherance of official duties.

The association said the Law Officers should also refrain from conducting government business in line with its collective resolution.

It expressed hope that the seven-day warning strike would provide the authorities an opportunity to address the outstanding demands and avert further industrial action.
