…Uro-Chukwu Champions Physician-Biochemists’ Future

The Association of Medical Biochemists of Nigeria (AMBN) has elected Prof. Henry Uro-Chukwu as its National President for a renewable two-year term.
Prof. Uro-Chukwu emerged at the association’s first Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from June 23 to 26, 2026.
The conference, themed “The Role of Medical Biochemists in Repositioning Medical Education for the 21st Century Healthcare,” focused on strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery.
Other officers elected include Prof. Aminu Ishaka (Vice President), Dr. Anthony Uwah (Secretary-General), Dr. Bassey Inyang (Assistant Secretary), Dr. Boma Harris Opusunju (Treasurer), Dr. Oghagbon Ewemade (Financial Secretary), Dr. Agara Humphrey NdooyaaBari (Publicity Secretary), Dr. Funke Opajobi (Editor-in-Chief) and Prof. Blessing Idonijie (Ex-Officio). The new executives were sworn in immediately after the election.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Uro-Chukwu thanked members for their confidence and appealed for their support, describing his election as a call to service. He stressed the need to strengthen the role of Physician-Biochemists, whom he described as one of the most endangered medical specialties.
The conference attracted key stakeholders, including representatives of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, universities, teaching hospitals and medical associations. A major highlight was the induction of Prof. Uro-Chukwu and three others as Foundation Fellows of the association.
Delegates from more than 10 universities attended the conference, while the association commended its outgoing Interim Caretaker Committee and the Local Organising Committee for a successful event.
Meanwhile, Prof. Henry Uro-Chukwu is a practicing physician and the Director of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki. He also serves as an adjunct Associate Professor of Public Health Medicine and Nutritional Biochemistry in the Department of Community Medicine and the African Institute for Health Policy and Health Systems at Ebonyi State University. He is also a bonafide citizen of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
