2027: Ebonyi APC Moves for Consensus Mode as Stakeholders Back Governor Nwifuru
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State have expressed support for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s proposal to adopt a consensus arrangement in selecting the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a consultative meeting held at the Governor’s Office, Centenary City, Abakaliki, which brought together key political figures including former governors, serving and former National Assembly members, ex-deputy governors, former ministers, ambassadors, and principal officers of the State House of Assembly.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, said stakeholders thoroughly reviewed the political landscape and unanimously agreed to support the governor in driving a consensus process across all constituencies and senatorial districts.
According to him, the arrangement is aimed at strengthening party unity and ensuring cohesion ahead of the elections. He added that stakeholders are committed to backing the governor to establish clear modalities for the process.
He stated that “no constituency will be subjected to competitive primaries,” noting that consensus had been collectively adopted as the preferred approach.
The party further reaffirmed that all 2027 electoral activities in the state must be conducted under the direction and approval of Governor Nwifuru, warning that any actions outside this framework would be regarded as disloyalty to the party.
However, in an earlier publication, the Minister of Works and former governor, David Umahi, rejected the proposed consensus arrangement, insisting that aspirants should obtain forms and participate in a proper nomination process.
In a statement by his media aide, Francis Nwaze, he warned that any consensus lacking unanimous consent could weaken party unity.
However, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress dismissed his stance as disruptive and disrespectful to the governor’s office.
Speaking through its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Arum Kenechukwu, the party urged restraint and reaffirmed that all processes for the 2027 elections must align with the governor’s directives, cautioning aspirants against actions deemed disloyal.
