The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi State has abandoned its governorship ambition and thrown its weight behind Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s re-election bid in 2027, following the withdrawal of its candidate, Chief Mrs Lucy Odom, from the race.
The political realignment, which signals a major boost for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was announced on Saturday in Abakaliki during a gathering of APGA leaders, candidates and stakeholders, where the party formally resolved to enter into an alliance with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, APGA’s Ebonyi North Senatorial candidate, Chief Chikaodili Ojimba, described the development as a landmark political decision, commending Odom and her running mate, Terry Alu, for putting the collective interest of the party above personal ambition.
Ojimba said Odom had demonstrated political maturity and integrity by honouring the party’s agreement despite the challenges associated with the negotiations, assuring her and her running mate that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
He called on APGA members to close ranks and mobilise support for Nwifuru’s second-term ambition, citing the administration’s achievements in security, education, peace and general development.
While urging party faithful to work towards the governor’s re-election, he warned against political violence, stressing that electoral victory could only be achieved through peaceful engagement and effective grassroots mobilisation.
“Violence does not win an election,” he cautioned.
APGA’s candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Barrister Tochukwu Ogalagu, popularly known as T-Man, described the alliance as a demonstration of growing cooperation among progressive political forces.
He urged members to disregard distractions and focus on the forthcoming elections, explaining that the partnership was aimed at strengthening political cooperation and consolidating the developmental agenda of the Nwifuru administration.
Similarly, the party’s candidate for Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency, Ugochukwu Ojike, welcomed the decision, expressing optimism that the alliance would translate into electoral success in the 2027 general elections.
In her remarks, Odom explained that her decision to withdraw from the governorship contest followed extensive consultations with party members and other critical stakeholders.
Earlier, APGA State Chairman, Hon. Chukwudi Nwankwo, said the endorsement was the outcome of consultations and resolutions geared towards promoting peace, unity and development in the state.
A door-to-door campaign committee was inaugurated to mobilise support for Tinubu, Nwifuru and other APGA candidates. The event climaxed with an endorsement motion moved by Mrs Beatrice Nkwuda, seconded by Prince-Will Chukwu and adopted through a voice vote.
The development has sparked speculation among political observers that Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru may be heading for a landslide victory, although they maintain that unfolding political activities will provide a clearer picture.
